For all your acupuncture information:
What is acupuncture?Acupuncture is an ancient healthcare system that has been used for thousands of years in China and other Eastern cultures to help restore, promote and maintain good health. It is now widely accepted and used all over the world, including the UK, as a tried and tested complementary therapy.
How does acupuncture work?Traditional acupuncture views illness, symptoms and pain as distress signals and takes the holistic approach to healthcare by asking ‘who has the disease’ rather than ‘what disease do they have’; seeking to find the root cause of the problems rather than merely treating symptoms.
Acupuncture works to maintain the body’s equilibrium by focussing on all aspects of a person’s well being: physical, mental and emotional (Mind / Body/ Spirit), recognising that an imbalance in one aspect will affect the others.
According to traditional Chinese philosophy, health is dependent on the smooth, unobstructed flow of energy (known as ‘Qi’) through a series of channels (known as ‘meridians’). Any imbalance or obstruction of this flow as a result of stress, anxiety, grief, poor nutrition, infections, physical or emotional trauma, hereditary factors etc, may result in illness.
The Acupuncturist seeks to correct any imbalances in the flow of Qi by inserting very fine needles into specific acupuncture points in order to remove blockages and aid free and smooth flow throughout the body. This enables the body’s own natural healing process to be stimulated into action to help relieve pain and symptoms and gradually restore balance and health.
Why acupuncture?Good health is not just the absence of pain or disease. It is about feeling good, with energy, ambition and desire to reach full potential in health and life, as far as Nature will allow. Balancing Qi with acupuncture is based on the principles of the natural world and can enable you to reach your true full potential. Because acupuncture is aimed at the root, as well as the symptoms, of your condition, it can lead to a more permanent resolution of your problem than purely symptomatic treatment.
Who has acupuncture?Acupuncture is considered safe for all ages, free from harmful side effects and may be used alongside conventional medicine. Many people seek acupuncture for help with specific conditions or symptoms whilst others choose it to maintain health, strengthen their constitution, enhance their feeling of well-being or because they feel generally unwell, below par or lacking in energy.
Historically, emphasis was given to maintaining good health rather than treating ill health after it has occurred (remember the old saying 'prevention is better than cure?) It is therefore worth emphasising that acupuncture, along with a healthy lifestyle, may also be used as a preventative measure against illness – maintaining well-balanced Qi aids maintenance of good health.
What can be treated with acupuncture?Although the whole person is treated, and not merely their symptoms, acupuncture is widely considered to be beneficial for a wide range of conditions and appears to excel in treating those conditions of a chronic nature.
